The leading causes of stress in the UK
When we asked people across the nation about their day-to-day worries and what was causing them to feel stressed, the top answers revealed that people struggle most with switching off and resting, in addition to health worries and general uncertainties affecting daily life.
1
Lack of sleep (27%)
Nearly 1 in 3 Brits say poor sleep adds to stress, especially women (30%), less so over-65s (22%).
Unplug before bed, wind down, and see sleep as a chance to recharge and focus on yourself.
2
Mental and physical health concerns (21%)
21% of Brits say mental and physical health add to stress, rising to 36% in over-65s. Worrying about health is tough. Take time for yourself, step back when needed, and give your mind a break.
3
Uncertainty about the future (19%)
1 in 5 Brits feel stressed by future uncertainty, with 23% of 18–24s affected. Not knowing what’s next can be unsettling, but stay present, enjoy small moments and focus on the journey, not just the goal.

Taking the time to relax and reset
We spoke to Registered Psychologist, Rod Mitchell from Emotions Therapy Calgary who specialises in stress management and burnout counselling, to get his advice on how choosing grass over grind could benefit you.
“Nature engages what psychologists call ‘soft fascination’ – effortless attention that restores rather than depletes. Indoor environments demand focused concentration, while natural settings let your prefrontal cortex rest. Just 20 minutes outside in nature often creates measurable improvements in stress markers and cognitive function.
“Mindfulness transforms nature from backdrop to medicine. Many people walk outside but remain trapped in mental loops about work or worries. True mindful connection with nature happens when you deliberately engage your senses – counting bird sounds, feeling the breeze, and noticing temperature changes. This sensory engagement pulls your nervous system out of rumination and into recovery mode”.
